What is an email automatic responder?
An email automatic responder - or "autoresponder" - is an email address which responds automatically when it receives a message.
It can reply automatically to the sender with a preset message - one which you prepare in advance and is used repeatedly: every time it receives a message.
It can also do something with the information in the email it receives, like adding the email address of the sender to a database.
An autoresponder can also react to requests sent to it via an electronic form on a web page. I can use the form fields for building up a database of contacts or subscribers, and redirecting the subscriber to another page on your site.
So how does this help me in my Web business?

I use an email automatic responder to build a mailing list of visitors who are interested in my kiddies books. In passing through the site they get the opportunity to request a free download of one of my products. To get the download URL they supply their first name and email address via a form on one of the pages. This form sends the request to the autoresponder which responds with a message containing the information they need.
The benefit: I supply thousands of interested visitors with the details they need without lifting a finger!

GATHER DATA WHILE YOU'RE WORKING ON OTHER PROJECTS
At the same time (as supplying the required download details to my visitors) the email automatic responder quietly gathers the names and email addresses of my site visitors - with their consent! (I clearly state that they will in future receive my newsletter.)
The benefit: I'm building a mailing list of thousands of interested visitors while quietly going about my (other) business!

FOLLOW UP REGULARLY WITHOUT HAVING TO REMEMBER A THING!
In addition to sending that first automated message, I've set up the autoresponder to send a few more messages, spread over a couple of days. In these follow-up messages I ask whether they enjoyed the free download, and tell them about the rest of my products, how much other people enjoy the products, and mention any special offers available. As this is automated I don't have to keep track of anything, knowing that my marketing is all being taken care of.
The benefit: The autoresponder-backend keeps track of thousands of people and the messages I would like them to receive - freeing me up to, well..., write some more messages to add to the system!

HELPING YOU KEEP TRACK OF CLICK-THRU STATISTICS
Some of the more useful email automatic responders can also keep track of click-thru's in the body of the messages sent to the mailing list. I use this function whenever I make a special offer. This helps me to determine how effective the advert was.
